With a 533MHz Alpha running Linux from Microway, you
wouldn't have to give up 64 bit applications or part with too
much money ($2k). It competes in the same arena as an Origin
2000 for a fraction of the cost. Once you find that you don't need
the SGI graphics, there are lots of options.
