Pfizer to warn doctors about Viagra and nitrates

The television report said Pfizer sent the alert letter following cases where Viagra patients died after developing irreversible hypotension, or low blood pressure.

She said Viagra's package insert clearly states that such a combination could lead to a dangerous fall in blood pressure, or hypotension. Caprino added that nitrates in foods, however, such as in bacon and red wine, (this is WRONG, Red Wine WILL increase the Viagra effect, not from nitrates (wine has nitrites), but from the flavonoids) posed no danger to Viagra users.

Nitroglycerin is a commonly prescribed drug for angina, a cardiovascular condition in which patients experience sharp chest pains that often precede heart attacks. It works by lowering blood pressure.

Pfizer had originally tested Viagra for angina but the drug did not prove effective against the ailment. Researchers stumbled upon Viagra's effectiveness against impotence, however, when the angina patients originally tested noted its beneficial effect with erections. "Angina patients are not candidates for Viagra therapy. They shouldn't take Viagra, period, because if they have an angina attack while taking it they're likely to reach for their nitroglycerin bottle," Caprino said.

Hemant Shah, an independent New Jersey drug analyst, said Viagra's package insert gave clear warning for nitroglycerin users to steer clear of the drug. "Viagra is like rat poison to nitroglycerin users and the warning stands out."

Shah said the nitroglycerin "contraindication" was nothing new and would not slow Viagra's astounding sales. He predicted it would garner revenues of $800 million to $1.2 billion in 1998 and reach the "multibillions" in future years.

Pfizer was off 3-5/8 to 109-3/16 in morning trade.

Folks this is about four weeks after the release of Viagra, I think I may have mentioned this scenario (but I predicted the eye changes would do it), shorted PFE again after hearing of the Press Release. Making $$
