' Manufacturers get NIST aid on year 2000
bug
By George Leopold

Rockville, Md. - Commerce Secretary William Daley said
last week that the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) will
help small manufacturers fix year 2000 programming problems. The effort was
launched because small and midsized manufacturers have done little to assess
the year 2000 risks, Daley said.

Under the plan, partnership centers around the United States will conduct
seminars to raise awareness of the millennium-bug issue and to help
manufacturers assess their level of risk. If necessary, centers will aid
companies in planning remediation efforts.

"Many companies that are addressing problems with their computer systems
may be overlooking potential problems in other systems such as machine
controllers
and telecommunications," said Kevin Carr, director of the NIST
manufacturing partnership.
