With more than 85-90% of its business in mainland China, GuangDe Electronics will unleash a high-capacity VCD and Enhanced VCD in the Chinese market this month. In the past year, the VCD market in China began booming, with 360,000 VCD system equipment and accessories sold in 1997, earning the company a gross profit of NT$272 million. The company mainly produces VCD system equipment and accessories, including servers, image compressors and optical equipment components. All of its products are exported, with 85-90% going to mainland China and the rest to Vietnam and Southeast Asian countries. The high-resolution, high-capacity Enhanced VCD has a playing time of 120 minutes and 1.2GB storage capacity, thus allowing for an entire movie to be put on a single disk. In order to combat the problem of loss of image quality during compression, GuangDe has developed an image processing chip that causes the VCD player to identify discrepancies between the decompressed image and the compressed image code and make appropriate adjustments. The company is also marketing DVD players and, at the end of April, the company became a B-level member of the DVD Alliance. The company has also expressed plans to develop a line of digital cameras.
