janski,

"my limited understanding is that there is a lot of software that might have taken years to develop and refine depending on those various network protocols and hardware used to connect the nodes. You can't just replace those proprietary interface cards and switches with
FC ones and expect the software to work."

You are right - you can't replace proprietary cards and switches with interop FC gear unless you have the appropriate software/drivers. Of course all of the companies involved will tell you that they do. The other consideration is what you are clustering (node to node, node to I/O). Proprietary clustering currently rules the node to node clustering and FC is ramping up for node to I/O. I have posted what I think will be necessary for FC to encroach on node to node clustering and also posted a link to the U of Mn lab. I have also posted a link to a multiauthored Linux clustering software reference that lists for $30 bucks.

It would be very interesting to see what you could do with this software and an Ancor switch. The experiment might be useful because of the military COTS (commercial off the shelf) initiative.
