"Just before the closing bell, the New York Exchange reported short interest in the month ending May 15 rose 57.6 million shares to a new record of 3.93 billion shares in short position.
On the American Exchange, short interest rose 12.2 million shares, but that was at a record 191.1 million shares. And then the Federal Reserve reported in the week ending May 11, the M-2 money supply fell $6.5 billion."

The following days after Memorial Day holiday makes sense and is in line with my recollection. However, I remember selloffs just before the holiday weekend.
