I am definitely not rich, Duncan. I am one of the world's consistently worst stock pickers, and when I do buy a stock that ends up making a lot of money, I tend to sell it before it has had a chance to do that, and hold onto all the dogs in my portfolio. Ballard and Lucent would be good examples of stocks I bought very cheap and sold after making nothing on them, having lost patience or found something more intriguing on which I ended up losing money. And I squandered the discretionary income I did have on paintings and jewelry until I grew up a couple of years ago. I have had several Mercedes, but I like cars from the '60's, so they were not particularly expensive. I am more bohemian/artistic/intellectual than materialistic, definitely. I like to live in really beautiful places, and have sacrificed financial security to live in San Francisco, where the middle class is hanging on by its fingernails.

But I am much more of a capitalist than my father, who will not buy stocks because someone inevitably gets hurt when they move up and down. I have really come a long way back to the center after having socialist/idealist parents. Thank goodness for that!!

It is very hard to believe Lincoln outsells Cadillac. Lincolns are so ugly!! However, most people in California who can afford luxury cars buy European or Japanese ones, and have for a very long time. Is this a trend nationally? Brands really need to be careful that their products do not appeal only to Depends wearers. I do know that Lincoln has an SUV now--does Cadillac?
