I believe that the only effect of the CNN/BBC/ABC commentary on the Indonesian situation has been to make those Indonesians rich enough to own a television sweat at how close they came to the riots.

The revolution (as you describe it, correctly, I think) was borne of irate students and hungry out of work labourers. The core of their problems has not gone away, and the foreign commentary merely provides those people with welcome international endorsement for their upheaval.

The news on TVRI, RCTI and ANTV (the local channels) and the increasingly bold local print media are far more of a spur to their actions, I believe.
