Novell Sees 2Q Sequential Growth, Says
NetWare 5 On Track

By MARK BOSLET
Dow Jones Newswires

PALO ALTO, Calif., -- Novell Inc. (NOVL) said the success of
applications products, such as ManageWise and GroupWise, and of
infrastructure support software enabled it to show modest sequential
growth in its second quarter.

However, analysts and investors appear to be looking well beyond the
second and the third quarters to the release of the NetWare 5 server
operating system, which the company said is on track for late summer.

Novell Chief Executive Eric Schmidt said the sequential revenue growth
shows that Novell's turnaround is gaining steam. For the quarter, the
Provo, Utah, software maker still posted revenue that fell 4% to $262
million from $273 million a year ago. Revenue was $252 million in the
first quarter.

Second quarter earnings came to 5 cents a diluted share compared with a
loss of 4 cents a share last year.

Novell said its core NetWare sales were up slightly from the first
quarter. Applications products and infrastructure support software, such
as BorderManager and NDS for NT, increased 7%.

Still, the "big stuff hasn't been shipped yet," Schmidt said, adding that
NetWare 5 is on scheduled for the summer. So far the company has
distributed a beta test version of the product to 220,000 users and is
pleased with the feedback, Schmidt told Dow Jones.

The "underlying architecture and (software) engine are solid," while
Novell continues to work out bugs slowing up installation and the
management console, he said.

"Obviously, all eyes will be focused on the progress with NetWare 5,"
said Joel Achramowicz, an analyst at Preferred Capital Markets, who
said he expects the product in August.

However, in the meantime "I am concerned about the transition at this
point," he said. New applications products, such as Z.E.N.works, will
have to help get the company through the third quarter, Achramowicz
said.
