'Far From the Madding Crowd'!

Tommaso:
After two thousand years of mass / We've got as far as poison gas." wrote Thomas Hardy during WWI..

A Thomas Hardy fan are you??? One of my favorite writers.I love this guy.[Hope we are taking about the same Hardy].Just read 'The Return of the Native' again.

Since we are on the subject of death, mayhem and nuclear annihilation, don't forget our kids' contribution in the U.S to this perceived 'noble' and possibly 'fitting' end of a stupid species. The last I heard 36,000 people are killed every year right here at home without even lifting a finger [pun intended] .Well that is like having a small war every year right here on home turf.

Tommaso, My figure did not come from an impeccable source, and we have left out Cambodia and East Timor at least, the latter particularly appropriate to this forum today. For antecedents for genocide among animals you might find something of interest in Jared Dimond's Third Chimpanzee. A horrid subject, I agree. I will go back to sleep mode!

Sincerely, Seppo
