For large customers, there can be a lot of subtle benefits that a savvy IT manager can take advantage of. There are microsoft licensing arrangements where the 'reseller' must act as agent for the customer as a part of either 'select' agreements (where Dell has been a pioneer of innovative customer relationships) or MOLP packaging (where the channels have done better). Microsoft provides deals which advantage one or another model in different circumstances. Dell has been better than the competition at adding business capability to take advantage of each of these niche opportunities without disturbing the overall model but the channels have been fighting back to get terms which allow them to do special bundling for certain classes of customers. This is a fast moving landscape equal in complexity to the technology landscape but understood by a lot fewer people.
