JPR and Mohan: The US policy towards China will not shift over-night. Conservatives in the US are very worried about US' China policy. But, there is no consensus yet because India is still considered to be an ally of Russia, although India does not want to be perceived that way. India wants the US realize that the Indo-Soviet treaty was the result of the US (and the West) black-mailing India through their overt military support of Pakistan. While the US dramatically shifted its policy towards Pakistan by curtailing military support since Reagan met with Indira Gandhi, now the Administration has a serious confusion. They are not prepared to give a nuclear cover to Pakistan because India has never initiated a war against Pakistan and/or China. They may give the F-16s. But, the best the US should do is give Pakistan their money plus interest (under standard business practice), force them to give up their anti-India policy (it is like the West giving up the policy of instigating Pakistan), and talk to India on the Kashmir issue. India's geopolitical relevance was not appreciated, for the prevalence of poverty, illiteracy and all other things that India did not have. US did not think that India really mattered in their strategic thinking. They were paying lip service by extolling the virtues of Gandhian principles of nonviolence, just to keep the Indians from progressing further along a self-contained, self-directed, self-defending and self-respecting country. A nuclear India changed all that. Now every Tom, Dick and Harry of a country, who enjoy the nuclear umbrella, come down harsh on India for wanting to defend itself and its almost 1 billion people. Shame on them. Why would they not persuade US to provide an iron-clad guarantee to provide nuclear umbrella to India? India doesn't really need it now. BJP by-passed all these obstacles and malignant considerations to earn its place in this world, in the name of Bharat Mata and its 1 Billion children and say NEVER AGAIN to any foreign invasions. JPR
