Holly, I wanted to challenge your spelling of maven/mavin (especially since my "maven" disagrees with your "mavins"). But, first I wanted to check in a dictionary, to make sure. Well, would you believe, I couldn't find the word in the first four dictionaries I consulted. (I really need to buy a new dictionary!) I did find it in the fifth, which gave both "maven" and "mavin" as acceptable spellings.

What surprised me, however, was to learn that the word comes from the Yiddish! Yet one more example of Yiddish's contribution to English, a subject on which we had some discussion on this thread not so long ago.
