If you're placing an order on Nasdaq stocks, you can verify that orders are sent to island (http://gritch2.isld.com/gritch/index.html) You're out of luck of the stock is on AMEX or the big board.

I have always seen my orders above the bid immediately reflected in the market. (At least on NASDAQ stocks. NYSE and AMEX are another story... grrrrrrrr.....)

Watch the bid. If it does not immediately match your above-the-bid buy order, first check to see if you got an execution (which you should see go by on your R/T quotes) and then immediately call Datek and complain.
