It should've downloaded java activator. Do you see anything on the "blank" screen? Normally there should be a white square box, and below it "GRITCH (c)1997 Joshua Levine"

Are you using IE or Netscape? I find that the java applet runs fastest on Sun's own HotJava Browser (http://java.sun.com/products/hotjava/1.1.2/), it's compact and does the job quite nicely. I installed HotJava and it worked right out-of the-box with the Island Book. One exception- you can't be behind a firewall when you try to access it.
