penni,

I'm still chuckling. The non sequitur is a highly subjective concept, solely dependent upon how readily the listener/reader is able to follow the speaker/writer's thought processes. That said, you may be the Non Sequitur Queen in Texas, but I hold the title in Northern California, and I earned it fair and square.

As for punctuation belonging inside quotation marks, I agree with your and jbe's logic and the reference to the venerable Fowler. However, I am but a slave to the red pencil. I have been taught.

BTW, the AHD is widely regarded as the most bastardized of dictionary references. I'm surprised to learn that you even allow that wretched volume a place in your household! <obligatory vbg>

It's been a long time since I've come by here. Nice to see the place alive and well-tended.

I would like to add that there is a school where people learn to simply discard the initial question. Have you ever listened to politicians or nearly any powerful person give an interview? A question is posed. Often this question is the very model of clarity and concision. Even so, the speaker will launch into an "answer" that deliberately skates rings around the real question. In the case of politicians on TV, they invariably use the question for a springboard for some polemic.

We're teaching the audience that evading the question is not only acceptable, but a leadership quality. Concurrently it has become impolite to remind the speaker to please "answer the question."
Oh goody, I got to try the quotation mark thingie!
