PerSeptive Biosystems POROS(R) Chromatography Media Manufacturing
Plant Certified

A Perkin-Elmer (NYSE:PKN) manufacturing plant in Cambridge, MA has
achieved ISO 9002 registration. The plant, commissioned by
Perkin-Elmer's PerSeptive Biosystems unit in January 1996,
manufactures chromatography media and columns used for research scale
separation of biomolecules and bulk media used in biotherapeutic
manufacturing applications. The products are sold worldwide under the
POROS trademark. The registration process, through TUV Management
Services, began last summer and was completed with a successful audit
at the end of the year.
"This registration is a major milestone in the development of our
POROS media business and is confirmation of our long-standing
commitment to quality and customer service," said Erik Wallden, vice
president of the PerSeptive BioSeparations Business Unit. "ISO
registration is especially critical for the growth of our POROS
process chromatography media business. Another major milestone was
achieved recently when the first commercial process incorporating
POROS media was granted FDA approval," continued Wallden.
"The efforts of many people went into our accomplishing this
certification in near record time," stated Steve Curran, director of
POROS manufacturing. "Our historical emphasis on quality and quality
systems was developed jointly with our GMP-compliant customers and
contributed greatly to the speed with which we accomplished our goal.
In my experience, plants such as ours often take a year or more to
achieve registration. I commend all the individuals who made this
achievement possible."
