Alex,

Do you realize that you have just described the Secure Housing Unit at Pelican Bay (Crescent City, California)? Pelican Bay is where they send the baddest of the bad and the vilest of the vile. Pelican Bay, built in the early 1990's is said to be completely automated and computerized. Pelican Bay has been in and out of the courts over what is termed cruel an unusual punishment, under the US Constitution. Seems as how solitary confinement is regarded as cruel and unusual punishment.

Some fascinating stories have come out of Pelican Bay. I'm sure you've read and heard a few of them. Maybe if they set the inmates up with an Internet terminal that would keep everyone happy.

As for building prisons in remote areas, I'm all for it. What's stopping us? Ease of police and attorney access, for one. In recent years, there has been a movement toward bringing the trial to the prisoner, rather than the other way around, particularly when a crime is committed within the prison. There are other reasons--some logical and understandable, others not. Maybe we could even incorporate prisons in our space program. I'm not being facetious.

I also want to emphasize that I don't disagree with a thing you have said.

Holly

Give each cell a shower, a cot, and a Net terminal

I don't know Alex. Prison shouldn't be too attractive. Next thing you'll tell me is that they should be given memberships to SI. No telling what I might do.
