I think its important to point out that the cost of wiring up cities is not huge compared to the amount of coverage (in terms of people) one can provide. Wiring up New York and LA and then waiting six months should generate enough cash flow to be profitable and fund further expansion.

Most people tackling the "last mile" solution (such as ADSL, etc) are going to be spending Billions to upgrade the national infrastructure (if they succeed). For metricom to do it, it would be a LOT cheaper.. a $500 radio modem that servcies a couple hundered people is cheap compared to spending $50 - $100 to upgrade the quality of the copper for each of those hundered lines. (Or more if you upgrade coaxial or run fiber)
