Hey, Terry!
I think you err in equating the maternal emotions aroused in a woman as 'smarminess". These instinctive reactions are the reason children survive and mankind continues. The existence of maternal protectiveness and urge to nurture does not preclude the teaching of values, ethics, morality, or sound philosophy.
Your friend may have accomplished these "objective" goals, in addition to being a nurturing mother. However, Ann, and I noticed this in Atlas Shrugged-indeed, it is one of the weaker elements-, has no comprehension of what is involved in raising children and is a very non-nurturing personality, and really skipped over the whole thing with naivet‚, and so I can't really grant her opinions (or yours)about motherhood a lot of credibility.
Your final paragraph made me laugh. IT was definitely NOT an example of A=A. But you're so cute, I'll forgive you.

And so much damage is caused by men who yearn to screw, following their DNA urgings, they go after their best friends wives, create havoc in the workplace and now will be spending millions on viagra- silly irrational men. I think feathering a nest is much more rational than F$%&ing everything in sight. Of course I would never say all men are like that. Why I know a man in Thousand Oaks, Ca (or was it Pasadena?) who was actually faithful to his wife, but then such men are rare. Much more common are the kind that get upset because they can't get a girl and then decide to go shoot her and a bunch of other people. Yeah, guys are REAL rational FT.
