Fujitsu to Cut Semiconductor Investment 37%

Fujitsu <TOKYO:6702> announced that although the company's fiscal
1997 sales grew 3.4% to 3.229 trillion yen, its ordinary profit
fell 16.3% to 80.1 billion yen. The company's domestic shipments
of PCs reached 2 million units, but the fall in semiconductor
prices led to increased competition among the PC makers in the
stagnant market. In fiscal 1998, the company expects sales to
grow to 3.4 trillion yen, with ordinary profit remaining stable
at about 80 billion yen. In addition, Fujitsu will reduce its
fiscal 1998 investment in semiconductors by 37%, down to about 34
billion yen.
