You seem to have done well with T, as many who owned it pre breakup. I bot T at 15 and 17 in the 1970's and have no complaint acquiring baby bells and then NCR and LU. Sold NCR immediately.

You could be correct about limited T price appreciation short term, but I like what I hear from Armstrong and feel T will be profitable long term.

Sure, the market is a gamble, but when wasn't it??? It's a matter of balancing your portfolio and riding out the corrections. If you feel the market is risky why do you feel an index fund is a good place to be?
