" Do you find this to be the case in your area or is there some kind of magic that would keep a data channel open
when all the TV channels go down? "

hmm, my friends experience with cable modem has been much better than that in term of reliability. I know of one time where we had to stop a WarCraft II game because his link went down for about 3 minutes, but it's not a long delay. It was also in february, about the big ice storm here in Quebec, and it has been known that both phone, eletrical and cable companies had to make local cuts to repair their network. If this was the reason of the little downtime, I can't really blame anybody for it.

Aside than that, the cable company my friends use is also a major dialup ISP (videotron). They seem to have broad technical support within the co. They also provide some small local ISP's with bandwidth (i know of one in my area who is targeted mostly at "unfrequent users" using Videotron backbone). So, maybe our cable company is just more serious with internet access than yours, explaining how our experiences differ. Maybe your experience will improve in the future. Trying to predict the future is however quite difficult and I would prefer to use it on stocks than on cable ISPs ;-).
