RE: "How can Gateway and NEC do that. I thought it was prohibited by MSFT's illegal contracts? Gee whiz Mr. Klein said that was the case."

You Bring Up A Very Good Point!:
Intimidation. Box makers are apparently feeling a little less intimidated these last few heady days. (And they are covering their butts with the buying public too.) Box makers may not have been totally happy with Microsoft's business tactics. Looks like a power play may be in the works.

In any event, Box makers have dammed Microsoft with faint praise thus far.

Can any one name a single instance where a major box maker has effectively committed themselves to endorsing the complete Microsoft party line in the last four days?

My prediction: Expect Gates to hold a pep rally soon. Watch the lack of breadth and depth of commitment expressed by box makers when this happens. You may see a lot of talk of generalized principles, but less than prefect support for the specifics of the Microsoft agenda as expressed by Bill Gates at these rallies.
