Skipper, as long as you and Terrence both say that we need to leave earth because we have depleted its resources, and outgrown it, I think there is an issue of motivation involved. I think that if there were no alternative to living right here (and none has been executed, so we really don't know for sure), then much more energy would be focused on saving what we have.

There is really no absolute reason we cannot limit population growth, or stop the hole in the ozone from spreading, or stop pollution almost completely. Rather, many of us seem to lack the will to do these things (because we can always leave).

Someone, even a scientist, writing a book about living on Mars is not the same as doing it. And again, we have no guarantee at all that people will like living on other planets, or thrive there. There may be something absolutely essential to existence involved with keeping at least one foot on earth most of the time!!!

Why can't we plan to live on other planets, but keep our options open by saving this one. Certainly, we have the wealth and technology to do so.

Your url about Ayn Rand describes her as often "cold, bitter and depressed", and refers her long love affair while she was married as ultimately devastating to everyone involved. I am not sure this is a reassuring personal history for someone who has had such an influence on so many people here!!!
