Neil,

<<<Clariion's architecture supports individual storage systems customized for particular Unix and NT server-based applications. It also adds functionality to the company's FC 5500 units, letting customers set up systems for disparate functions such as file and print, video streaming, and online transactional processing. The architecture will be based on high-speed fibre channel hardware paired with software.>>>

From the same IBM/Clariion announcement, Clariion's going FC, no doubt. This new system consists of 3 major components, PDM(software), Infospeed(hardware), Tarpon(I think it refers to both Infospeed and Clariion's 5500 units). It has some compelling appeals to enterprise computing. It allows not only better storage management, but also allow much easier data translation(I'll like to call it that) among different operating systems. I think FC implementation of this whole system is not if but when. This system is targeting the current customer base. IBM can sell a lot of them right away. Many companies will buy it on day one. I can see some companies will buy just PDM and Infospeed on day one since they already have them all connected the old way and functioning fine. By adding PDM and Infospeed will immediately allow them data sharing in an easier way. I'm not sure if it's an option in not buying storage units.
