Richard, thanks for the comprehensive response.

Your delta neutral explanation makes sense. Interestingly, you examine the buy side of the 35000 contracts; whereas, I was assuming that someone sold the contracts and the MMs absorbed them for later distribution. Nonetheless, an inverse of your explanation can still be applied.

The fascinating thing is that a domino possibility exists. The implications are that hedge activity could move the stock by a few points, requiring corrective action, and so on...
