Took a trip to the new CompUSA the other day...

cribbed from Yahoo/AAPL

>First,

jandr.com

I've seen a lot of GREAT ads in the Sunday paper for J&R, They
have about 2/3's of the back page of the times, and about 2/3's
of the entire center column are devoted to the Mac, with MUCH
less mention of their PC's. Figured I'd check their web site.
Apple gets the front page... don't see any PC's there.

Heard a CompUSA ad on the radio last week, they started with a
"news" type ad. They do a little speach about "Windows isn't the
only choice, and we'll be right back after these messages to
explain why." I was, of course, pretty excited about this. They
did a 30 second ad with NO mention of Microsoft products, went
through a TON of products, but no Microsoft. Then the "news"
comes back on, and they say, "Of course there is Macintosh, but
do you know that there is a powerful solution called Linux?"
Then they went on for about another 15 seconds about how you
don't need Windows, and Linux is a good choice.

I thought this was more than a little strange... not that they
are distancing themselves from Microsoft as much as the empire
allows them too, but that they are pushing Linux??

Whether or not they offered the Mac as a solution, I think we
are helped by this... they might get people to look for
alternatives, and when they realize Linux really is for
"techies", they might take a look at the Mac, which they
wouldn't have before.

Then, went to the new CompUSA in Totowa, NJ that opened about
two months ago. Everything looked nice and neat in the SWIAS,
just like the other 4 in the area (although the one on Broadway
and 8th is a little strange, it's just that the entire store is
a little strange). No G3 Powerbooks (other than the 250, but
that's been here for a while). The store was pretty empty, but
the salesman RAN right over to me while I was in that SWIAS. He
tried to help me, but really didn't know much about the Mac.
Didn't know anything about the new powerbooks... BUT, I hope
CompUSA is making sure these guys are helping people in the Mac
sections. Next step is to get them trained.

As I was walking out, I heard something about the mac on the
speakers with ads piped through the store. It was the very end
of their mac plug, but it was pretty much speaking of all the
benefits of the MacOS... the little bit I heard sounded VERY
positive.

Anybody else in CompUSA lately?

How 'bout online? They've completely changed their site.

compusa.com

AGAIN, GREAT exposure here, Apple is the TOP link on the right.
They have a news ticker applet, and the ONLY specific company or
software that is mentioned is "Mac". They say "AOL Users Click
Here", and then "Hey Mac users,..." That's it. The rest is just
general information about CompUSA.

PowerBooks are selling good. The rest of retail is having a lot
of fun with this. Come the middle of July, so will we.

The ONLY Powerbook CompUSA is this one: Apple Macintosh
Powerbook G3 32MB 5.0GB 20X 12.1in Active

Strange... this is the Old G3 250, and it's more than the 14.1"
292. But if CompUSA has sold out already... I'm assuming things
are good. If anybody wants to bitch about Apple not being able
to keep up production, Tim Cook will have this under control
FAST if there actually is any problem there... there is no
evidence that there IS a problem.

Things are good... Apple at $27.50 is great... gives us more
time.

C-Man sorry for you , blame AAPL's actions on its survival instinct

I observe your selling $2 mln/yr should qualify you for AAPL's new lowered VAR threshold . Hope you consider it .

Soup's link (Jobs' & DOJ) contained a assessment of the situation which prompted Friday's action by AAPL :

" Jobs has demonstrated amazing pragmatism
understanding that Apple's fortune depends on
making quality products with new functionality --
as well as operating within a competitive cost
structure allowing the company to charge
competitive prices and make a profit. "

I suspect AAPL will sell low margin , competitive products direct .

However it is morphing into a multi-platform OS company and there will be new installation and support (enterprise/networking/multi-user) opportunities for VARS at the $2 mln threshold .

Look forward to reading your posts about the coming MacWorld , this Summer's new product (H/W & OS) events , and hopefully that marketing savy CEO to handle AAPL's expanded horizions .

Regards,
Jim K.
