I do not recall the intent to implement filtering. This thread was started to remove the discussion from the Welcome thread as it did not seem appropriate there.

I also do not like reading cat fights. They are not as overwhelming as you seem to be indicating. Most of the threads that I read ( I do read quite a few) are not dominated by fighting. The filtering topic seems to arise in relation to a minority of specific threads. These threads or individual posters seem to be the problem, not the SI format.

Brad has stated his view that he would prefer to focus on positive improvements rather than the negative. He is not alone with his view. I do not believe the approach is as deeply motivated by profit as you describe.

SI management ( Brad ) has addressed the issue directly. First Brad intervened on an out of control thread to try and bring it under control. I do not recall the thread but the complaints from that thread have diminished so I assume that it had some benefit.

Brad also indicated that SI was going to add someone to the staff to address this issue. I think we should give this approach the benefit of time before jumping to the conclusions of the demise of SI.

Perhaps the best approach now for threads like the Ligand thread would be to PM the new SI administrator with the complaints. Perhaps she/he will deal with them directly.

>>Can you provide me with a copy of the post where SI stated they planned a filtering system for SI?

He [Brad] has never stated that to my knowledge. He has stated a reluctance to materially alter the inherent "continuity" of the site, with good cause from my point of view. It is not simply a case of excluding one person's messages; by doing so a reader may interpret other non-filtered messages out of context, possibly resulting in the filtering user posting repetitious or out of context messages, thus inadvertently becoming a nuisance themselves.

The current functionality has sufficed for 4.5 million messages, proving that is can and does work. Any material change to that model deserves extensive consideration prior to implementation in order to avoid opening a Pandora's box.
