Been there, done that. 35 years in the industry with a major computer firm and several years second job on PCs. Not enough markup for a small operation unless you cater to a local population that is willing to pay for the personal availability of a quality shop. State taxes alone add extra 5% to customer cost so its hard, everyone wants the best but it has to be the cheapest and of course a small shop doesn't get any volume price breaks. On the supermicro case, its been so long ago can't say. However my technique is Pricewatch, Pricescan, and selected distributors. As I recall there was a $40 delta between the cheapest and most expensive (159-199). I'll be rechecking cases in a couple of weeks as I get my prices lined up for the June PII price reductions (when I will purchase my new system and replace a tower I've had for many years, since it can't handle the new ATX form factor, and has housed 4 processor generations). If you are having it pre assembled for you, send out request for price quote (RFP) for BEST PRICE to several places specifying the specific components and requiring a line item response for each component including assembly; shipping to your house; any bundled SW; applicable taxes. Also require a written statement of warranty on parts and labor for each line item and return policy. This not only gives you complete details to compare one against the other but it also assists by having them also search for best price.
