one of the brokers that i use will short odd lots. They told me that they are required to obtain a round lot. The customer would
receive the odd lot requested. i'm not sure what they would do with the balance.

I have shorted odd lots through Datek and have never had a problem - it may vary from stock to stock. I would assume that the more shares the broker holds in street name the easier it is.
