I have a feeling that the E-mini trading between 9:15 and 9:30 may represent a "tip-off" of similar magnitude

I find the spread between a cash close and futures pre-open to be a pretty good contrary indicator of the public's sentiment. The greater the spread, the more it pays to sell at the open and buy later in the day. I.e., today the spread was around +5, so I sold PFE for 106 13/16 at the open (it closed on Friday @ 105 7/16) and a few hours later bought it back for 104 1/8.
