The subject is probably more on topic here #Subject-18946 . I do not know much about Win 3.1, I went from DOS to Win 95. Win 3.1 does have a swap file but I do not know how to configure it. What size is your harddrive and how much space is available. If you post the question on the noted thread perhaps we can find an answer.

Time for a new machine IMO.

>>>>Is it something easy to do or should I take it in to a shop? I'm still using a 486 and Win 3.1. <<<<

the machines get over clogged with junk in the cache and parts of old deleted programs with empty space spread out all over the place on your drive. To fix, back up all, then reinstall all the programs you wish to keep.
Nice n fresh and clean, but a pain in the a** to do.

I have a new big pentium, with Win 95, a year old, and it does the same thing your 486 does.
It's a clog problem, not a "new puter need"
although, more memory might help

sorry, I give you no ammunition to use for buying a new puter LOL

unless, of course, you have money, sitting, gathering dust. THEN...sheesh BUY a new one.

>>A related question-I did delete some programs to make more disk space. However, the icons are still displayed on start-up. Is this normal?<<

The icons are because you have not completely uninstalled the programs. It is almost impossible to completely uninstall Windows programs as there are so many shared files. Uninstalling and reinstalling a program will not necessarily clean up your harddrive although it can cleanup the individual program.

The icons are not doing any harm and do not take up much disc space. I am sure someone can tell you how to delete them if they bother you.

I did not mean to imply that in order to fix your churning you need to get a new machine. My implication was that you will note a significant overall performance increase with a Pentium class machine.

I use Netscape and my machine starts to churn after surfing for awhile, I accept it as a Windows thing. I will not go back to IE. The Opera browser as discussed on the Opera thread sounds interesting.

Win 3.1 and the icons are still displayed on start-up

to delete a program icon, click on it once to select it. Open the File menu and choose the Delete command (or, as a shortcut, just press the Del key).

The Program Manager will ask if you want to delete the icon. Click yes in the dialog box and that should do it.
