The Economist editorial you cited has a similiar tone to an interview I saw with the Connecticut Attorney General - through tie-ins, and other documented practices (uncovered in documentation at Microsoft) Microsoft appears to have restrained trade and harmed the consumer.

It seems possible that Microsoft could face big fines or even rebates to consumers as a result of the trial starting next fall, but I doubt the results of the trial will be anywhere near as drastic as some (Microsoft bears) think. Possibly some slow-growth application product lines will be spun off, but this would only help Microsoft grow faster in the future, especially with the threat of litigation behind it.
