Novell Turnaround Continues -- Profitable quarter is third in a row
By Monua Janah

Novell continues to make progress toward a financial turnaround. The networking software company last week reported net income of $19.3 million, or 5 cents a share, for the second quarter ended April 30, compared with a net loss of $14.6 million for the same quarter a year ago.

Novell beat the Wall Street consensus estimate by about 1 cent per share, even though sales for the quarter dropped 4% to $262 million, from $273 million in the second quarter of fiscal 1997.

Revenue from Novell's NetWare server operating systems was up only slightly from the first quarter, but the company said sales of applications products and infrastructure support software increased 7%. Novell's balance sheet remains healthy: Cash and short-term investments totaled $1.09 billion for the quarter, up 9% from a year earlier.

This marks Novell's third consecutive quarter of profitability, following two periods of losses in mid-1997. Wall Street had largely written off the company as irrelevant, but analysts say Novell may become a more significant player with the release of NetWare 5 this summer.
