Art Ettlinger says why
Ashton Mining of Canada Inc. (ACA TSE) operates the Buffalo Hills project,
and along with its partners Pure Gold Minerals Ltd. (PUG TSE) and Alberta
Energy Company LTD. (AEC TSE) continues to show remarkable exploration
success. Nine new kimberlites were discovered this winter, raising the
total to 23 known pipes. More importantly, these pipes appear to occur in
at least four separate clusters as much as 30 kilometres apart. The first
diamond counts from new discoveries at K-3, K95 and WP confirmed earlier
observation by Ashton with regards to kimberlite diamond content. Pipes K-3
and K-95 are in the southernmost cluster of pipes. Reverse circulation
drill samples from K-3 and K-95, weighing 180.2 and 90.0 kg, respectively,
returned no diamonds. Analyses from other pipes in this cluster, such as
K-1 and K-4 similarly returned little or no diamonds. Pipe WP, however,
returned a total of four diamonds, from an 89.0 kg sample. Two of these
diamonds had maximum dimensions of 0.6 and 1.6 mm. WP is 550 metres north
of K-14 and is part of the northernmost cluster of pipes. This cluster,
which includes K-91 and K14, has returned the most encouraging diamond
results to date.
Ashton announced an initial budget of $10-million , to be split among the
three partners, for the Butfalo Hills project for 1998. This is almost
twice the amount expended in 1997 and includes acquisition of a 10 tonne
per hour dense media separation plant to be located in Alberta. This will
enable Ashton to increase the rate at which it processes mini and bulk
samples collected from the kimberlites. The cost of this plant is in the
$2-million range and likely would not be considered if Ashton did not
anticipate a larger sampling program in the future.
