Meanwhile cable operators, including Cable & Wireless, are busy testing cable modems for use in supplying multimedia
services to the residential market. "Working with both these industry sections
makes sure that whatever kind of access technology is being used, there will
be consistent integration for an array of services into the home," said
Dobrowski.

There are two companies leading their respective packs in ATM for CPE:

COM21 (IPO-ed on Friday under CMTO/NASDAQ) for the cable industry; and Efficient Networks (private), for ADSL. From Monday's IBD:

<<<COM21 climbed 3 1/2 to 15 1/2 on its first day of trading. The Milpitas, Calif., provider of communications products and services offered 5 million shares at $12 each. They opened at 15 5/16.>>>

I didn't get the IPO for CMTO, but will take a position next week. Efficient Networks says they'll have "a public event" at the end of '98 or beginning of '99.

If you check out CMTO, be sure to look under Company Information for "management." I'd say these guys have pretty good pedigrees.
