Compaq can't sell both direct and through retailers/distributors. If they charge lower prices selling direct, their retail/distributors market will dry up. If they charge the same prices selling direct, they will not be successful because others like Dell and Gateway charge lower prices.

A,

Like you, I believe that the other manufacturers will try to emulate DELL. It has been my experience that while a 'process' may work 'well on paper', the actual implementation of that process is generally more difficult. DELLs process is probably not a secret, but Gateway has not been able to successfully compete, and Gateway has the closest model. (ie no channel)

DELL has been able to develop and what's more important, implement the plan successfully. The other companies will have to play catchup, and I see no indication that DELL is going to stop advancing the mark, especially in the Server area, by lowering the prices, again the other manufacturers will have to play catchup, using fewer dollars, while still supporting (at least on paper)the 'channel' system. Not impossible, but definitely not a 'foregone' conclusion.

BTW, if CPQ starts to show the continue types of return that DELL has, I'll be there! I didn't 'marry', it is just a 'good friend', but you know how 'fickle' friendships can be. My friendships can stand some 'rough' times before I change the relationship to an 'acquaintance' as I currently have with INTC, LU, GTW, CPQ and others. They are at least still being 'tracked' by my program.

Regards,

Ken
