** OFF TOPIC **
JBE, I'm totally agreed with you. Average person will do better with diversified managed/index mutual funds. I work as design engineer full time, but I can follow my stocks daily and on intra-day basis. I do not make enough money on my regular job to stop trading and do not make enough money through trading to quit a regular job. But they supplement each other: paycheck every 2 weeks and benefits from my employer and extra cash from trading. I do not have to ask my boss for a rise. Instead I'm trying to make money somewhere else. I've done a lot of side projects for different companies here in US and in Russia. For now I can get more money for time spend in the stock market then designing machinery.
About discount on CEF check GER. I bought it in 1995. I believe discount did not change much since. May be it is a bad example, also they pay about 10% yearly dividend.
Have to go,
Good luck
