Islam as it was written originally was full of love and respect for women. It is difficult to see that now that the fundamentalists have taken it over. I think that is a good example, however, of how a belief system that may sound wonderful can change over time and become very oppressive.

Christine:

Hi! Just a quick comment on the above:

I think this issue goes back to stereotypes in that Muslims are viewed as being inconsiderate of their wives. Try telling that to a Muslim wife and you might get rather loud laugh.

Most Muslim women that I have met are Feminist. Islam was the first religion to give women the right to vote, to own property, to be equal to the man, among many other things. You might also know how relatively those rights came into the U.S.....

The Muslims believe that Men and Women are equal but different. Men have their strengths and responsibilities just as women have different strengths and responsibilities. The picture most would like is a horrific tale of beating wives and terrible acts. I think it's because people feel more comfortable if they believe they are better than other groups of people.

So to make a final comment, I think Islam gives women so many rights and was the basis for a feminist movement that came many centuries later (13) to the western world (and eastern for that matter). I know many feminist groups that trace certain rights back to Islam, in fact.

Thanks!
