Spots, Andy, all,

I use Netscape 2.01 under Windows 3.1 and DOS 5.0 on a 386DX-25 with 8 megs of RAM and 1 meg of DRAM. I have set the smartdrive values to 2048/2048. I set the Netscape disk and memory cache values to zero and let smartdrive sort out memory allocation. I have graphics turned off. Periodically, I go in and delete the netscape.hst (history) file. With this configuration, Netscape runs faster and for quite some time before disk thrashing commences. Usually, I am able to correct this by closing Netscape, not finding it necessary to close Windows or go to the C:\prompt or disconnect from my ISP.

I have run across some websites that seem to demand the presence of a memory and/or disk cache, and I avoid those sites once identified.

For whatever reason, my Windows version does not include sysmeter.exe. However, there is a shareware program, Winmiser. The registered version of Winmiser will return leaked memory to the system, whereas the unregistered version only gives an accounting of memory leaked or lost to the system.

Also, I run chkdsk/f (or scandisk in DOS 6.x) and defrag my hard disk frequently.

All in all, things are pretty zippy on my doorstop, er, 'puter.

Holly

Ah Haaa, so that is what a swap file is! Great explanation. Sounds like you (and others) have pretty well diagnosed my problem.

I did down-load Netscape 4.05 this afternoon, but can't seem to get it to work. I was expecting it to replace my old version but instead I now have both. The old one works but the new one does not dial out. I can't find a place to put in phone numbers to dial, settings, etc. At this point am very frustrated and ready to give up. I want a computer that works like a TV-turn it on, flip channels, turn it off. I hate having to spend a whole day fiddling with this kind of stuff.

Sorry for the rant. Thanks everyone for the suggestions.
