Re: Very Different Numbers for YTD Performance of OSX Stocks

Steve, what source did you use for your YTD numbers, and does it start the current year from December 31, 1997? Or from the beginning of some sort of pre-determined fiscal year (mid-March, say)?

I suspected something wrong when I saw that TDW was down only -5.0% for the year, rather than the -30.1% my portfolio told me it was down (I own that particular turtle). Then I suspected that these were the figures for one-year performance. No, that's not it either.

Puzzling. Here's my list of numbers for YTD performance, followed by 1-year performance numbers in brackets (counting back one year from this past Friday), to brighten the over-all picture.

RIG +3.7% (+45%)
FLC -1.8% (+26.9%)
SLB -1.5% (+33.5%)
RDC -18.6% (+18.6%) (No, not a typo.)
NE +.8% (+47%)
GLM -18.2% (-.4%)
NBR -14.4% (+7.5%)
SII -16.1% (-2.9%)
RON -2.3% (+48.5%)
DI +12.9% (+37.7%)
BHI -17.1% (-4.5%)
VRC +22.4% (+94%)
HAL -5.0% (+30.1%)
GLBL +18.7% (+81.4%)
TDW -30.1% (-6.7%)

It looks to me as if the OSX average is down YTD (I get -4.4%, but I'm not sure I calculated the average correctly), rather than up by +20.6%.

If so, then one might have been better off buying into the Fidelity Select Oil Services Fund, which was at least up some 2% or so, than buying options on the OSX index, Or simply buying VRC and GLBL, and forgetting about all the rest! <gg>
