speed:
i haven't noticed any slowdown since i'm using Wingate. After all what i've read (and according to my own experience) network address translation (NAT) adds very very little overhead.
irc/ichat:
Its very important to recognize that NAT is not protocol transparent. So, it is necessary to check out the 'supported protocols' of wingate/winproxy to find out whether your application will work or not.
For example Wingate supports:
http(s)/ftp/xdma/vdolive/telnet/pop3/real audio/ + mapped links
For winproxy its more or less the same (for a detailed list you should check out the product descriptions)
A lot of applications can be run using mapped links.
A typical example is IRC.
So, yes it works 'behind' wingate/winproxy, but you need a mapped link. To be more precise, you need a mapped link for each IRC server you want to connect to.
Another example is 'Internet Trader' which needs a mapped link as well.
Some software however just don't work (because they send IP addresses as a part of their data transmission) For example you can't use the Island Limit Book viewer.
But there is always a work around for programs which cannot run 'behind' wingate/winproxy (i.e. on a client): you just run these programs on your gateway, i.e. the computer where wingate/winproxy is installed (of course this is only possible if you are free to decide where you can run your programs).
Whether iChat works or not..i can't tell.
You need the registered version of wingate if you have a LAN with 3 and more computers.
I would like to add some remarks about the multi mon setup:
it makes no difference how many monitors are attached to a computer, the performance is more or less the same. Unfortunately, you always tend to run more programs/tasks/processes on a multi mon setup and this will slow down you computer. When you increase the number of monitors you always increase the number of graphic processors as well: if you add 4 monitors you add 4 graphic processors and the graphic processing power is increased 4 times (thats parallel processing capability)! Of course, the CPU must now talk to 4 graphic processors which may add some overhead.
