Compaq has forgone profits for nearly two quarters to purge the channel of excess inventory. This, in effect, they lowered prices and created a price war that lowered profits for IBM and HP--but Dell profits increased. I haven't noticed any significant change in market share. So how much of a loss do you think Compaq will be willing to incur to gain market share. It looks to me like Compaq may have to "blink" first on cutting costs and giving up share.
