I can't assure you that there aren't any serious side effects from Norplant. There may be some, but these would have to be accepted in my compromise situation. With regard to the government's prohibiting procreation or choosing who should be allowed to have children, that is indeed a chilling Orwellian thought. I am not at all in favor of that. All I'm saying is that once someone has had a child, and admits she is incapable of supporting herself and her child by applying for government assistance,then the government (society) should have the right (duty) to insist that that person not have any more children until the time when she chooses to be responsible for herself.

I think forced sterilization may occasionally be indicated, in the case of severely abusive parents or mental retardation, but clearly this is dangerous ground already trod upon by such as Adolf H.

And I am against putting mothers with small children into the workforce and leaving their children in foster care. But indeed this is just what much of the middle class does daily.

A big problem, surely.
