I think you must just enjoy imagining me straddling a fence, George! It makes perfect sense to me that it would be logical to have an armed police force. Alex is saying that the police should be the first to disarm, as I understand it.

Certainly in relatively homogenous and placid cultures like Ireland or Wales, or rural Britain, unarmed police officers on patrol do make sense. But they have weapons locked up at their police stations, and can call in armed reinforcements if the need occurs. It's nice in a way, because often criminals who want to rob a bank, for example, do not arm themselves or shoot at police because there is no need to do that. So even criminals do not need to be armed, or heavily armed.

Very peaceful!! I guess you could even call it passive aggressive!!

Now that we have a nice, soft, gentle criminal class, how about some prisons where everyone has their own key?
