>>"On the other hand I once had a man come up to me in a disadvantaged part of Oakland, wanting to sell me a ring for 10 or 20 dollars, so he could hire transportation to get to his probation appointment. I gave him the money and told him to keep the ring."<<

Reminds me of this true story that happened to me a few years ago in New York.

My wife and I were sitting on the train in Grand Central Station waiting for it to leave. A young woman came in and announced to the whole car that her purse had been stolen and she needed $10 to buy a train ticket to Stamford. The silence was deafening. Finally I stood up and told the woman to sit down and that I would pay for her ticket when the conductor came to our car.

Well, she gave me this dirty look....said "f**k you" and got off the train.

Was I surprised? Not in the least.

Jim

Skipper, there are definitely some desperate people who truly are "bums", if you want to call them that. But most people who cannot support themselves have something seriously wrong with them, even though you may not be able to tell what it is.

I definitely know what you are talking about, however. I will happily give a donation to someone who is at least trying to juggle, play a musical instrument, sing a song or do SOMETHING constructive or entertaining in return for money. If someone manages to make my day really beautiful by leaving some haunting melody inside my head, that is a fair exchange.
