Hahahahah, and you think giving people back their tax dollars is going to make them want to tackle the truly needy? And FT thinks I deal in fantasy. Humanity is frequently a compromise between what we could do, if we gave all we had, and what we are willing to do. I think that most people are not willing to do very much themselves. And I again hold up the example of yourself. I could also say that out of a school of 300 students, we only get 8-10 parents who regularly attend PTA meetings. I could also say that when volunteers are asked for in our town one tends to see the same faces. So my guess is many people want to be responsible in a limited way, by delegating many large social problems to the government- although I guess you want to be neither responsible (by volunteering) nor do you want to assist with your tax dollars- which seems to me the height of irresponsibility.
