You Say Undefensible, I Say Indefendable. Let's Call the Whole Thing Off ...

>The 33.6 modem for an internet computer, on the other hand, is plain idiocy.< (How about *very special* idiocy. :0)

Alomex;

Actually I'm sure it's simply a matter of cost. APPL's putting its Geoport modem technology on the iMAc motherboard, so it doesn't cost them much. This technology's currently only good for 33.6K.

It's not ridiculous not to want to (a) raise the price or (b) bust your margin for a technology you know will be obsolete well before the rest of the machine.

Consistent with AAPL's refreshing new style of *underpromising*, they don't want to promise a 56K Geoport until the enabling software is ready.

That being the case, the iMacs should be firmware upgradeable to 56K if it isn't already by August.

I call them as I see them. If you recall, I supported the lack of floppy disk as I considered it more or less a non-issue. The 33.6 modem for an internet computer, on the other hand, is plain idiocy.

I agree. Look, we're talking about perception here, and Joe Sixpack thinks that a 33.6k modem is lame compared the latest and greatest, a 56k jobber. If Apple goes ahead and releases the iMac with a 33.6k modem, they're going to lose many sales because of it. It's just plain stupid, stupid, stupid.

As for Apple's contention that most ISP's only support 33.6k anyway, that's total hogwash. All of the larger ISPs in my area, and every national one I can think of support some form of 56k. For Apple to argue otherwise is pure foolishness.

I'm an avid Apple fan, and I've seen them make more than their share of fantastic blunders. Let's hope they wise up and put a 56k modem in there where it should be.

Alomex: You're right about the modem. Odds are that when it ships, it will ship with a 56K modem. Apple ships other Macs with that speed, so why wouldn't they ship the InternetMac with that speed? Let's see how it goes when it ships.
