Dear Greg;
You have a very good mind, thank you for sharing it. I must start off to warn you that you have asked very deep questions. Difficult to answer concisely. Please check me if I go overboard.
<<How do you answer the question: Could the Bible be wrong?>>
I believe the Bible cannot be wrong, but I may be mistaken. This is not a cop out it is my honest answer. I will try to refrain from quoting scripture but a bit may be needed. The Bible says that all scripture is breathed by God and is profitable. I have never found or been shown anything that can be demonstrated as false, many things are difficult but nothing is mutually exclusive of the truth. I believe God is sovereign and is able to communicate and say precisely what he means to say. If anything could be shown as provably false I would have to look elsewhere for truth. The Bible holds itself to this standard. Deuteronomy 18:22 When a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD, if the thing does not come about or come true, that is the thing which the LORD has not spoken. The prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him. If you were to study the prophecy record of the Bible you would be amazed.
I shared with you how I met the Lord and this is the strongest evidence to me. I can never fully communicate this because it deals only with my personal experience, changed life and elation at knowing the man. If I ever have the privilege of meeting you I will not doubt your existence. However, I might be wrong, it might be an illusion. I doubt it because I believe that God gave me a sound mind. If it evolved at random, I guess I might not be able to trust it as it may be fooling me with random firing. But I digress.
Let's return to prophesy. The Apostle Peter knew the Lord much better than I know you. He saw many amazing things with his own eyes, yet he was able to say that the words of Prophesy about Yeshua were even more convincing.
2Pe 1:19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: 20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. 21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake [as they were] moved by the Holy Ghost.
These are very burdensome standards that the Bible sets for itself, if it fails I would be tempted to dismiss it and pray that I would be able to do so. I realize that there is an element of faith that is precious to me. However, the simple fact is that if the Bible is the Word of God, it would be incapable of error. I have made this judgment and so far have not been disappointed.
I believe this is a very scientific decision on my part. Having put forth the Hypothesis that the Word of God is true, I am now setting about to investigate that possibility. I am putting it's suggestions to work and testing them. I am watching when I violate it's standard what the consequences are. I am looking for error. Until I find one I must assume my theory true. This theory came about because of experiences I have shared with you and cannot deny. Only if definitive proof of error occurs will I rethink the hypothesis. One test of any theory is does it help to explain or shed light on our understanding of reality. To this question I must give the Bible more credit than I have room for here.
<<How do you view religion and science?>>
I must admit that I do not like religion. I never have. Although you may call me religious and I would understand your reasoning. I hopefully search for relationship and not religion. In this way religion and science have much in common. Both are man's attempt to explain large misunderstood concepts. Both generally turn out to be wrong. They need to be changed in order to fit new discoveries. I have a very strict view of my relationship with God. I believe that Yeshua created you, me and Jupiter. That our universe is held together moment by moment by him. That he does not need scientific theory, as he knows exactly how he did it. He proved that he is more than a man through the undeniable fact of his resurrection from death. He has proved it to me in many explainable and unexplainable ways. For me to doubt this would be rather like doubting I am enjoying our conversation. I am and I will not doubt it. He is and again I really don't doubt. I have always been scientific in my orientation to life. I still am. The simple fact is that the preponderance of evidence agrees that Yeshua is God. The evidence against is shaky at best. For this reason I am compelled to believe him even though it would be easier to believe I am in control of my life and can do whatever I like without consequence. However, knowing what I know it would be as unscientific, as thinking the sun won't come up tomorrow. While I suppose it is possible I think it is a safe bet it will. If it does not I'll change my mind in heaven. What will you do?
Thanks again for your thoughtful conversation. If this does not cover your questions call me on it. I do sometimes have a tendency to preach. One last question for you. If it were proven to you that Yeshua predicted his resurrection and then carried it out, would you agree that his other words of wisdom might be worth following?
